2015 Row by Row Experience
The beautiful new public docks at Rideau Ferry are a welcome sight to boaters from all over the world. Part of the historic Rideau Canal system, this spot has been connected to Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and ultimately, the Atlantic Ocean since the completion of the canal over 175 years ago. The park-like setting is also a pleasant spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy a walk along the waterfront, or take a break on one of the many benches and simply watch the boats go by.
Here, where the water narrows between the Big Rideau Lake and Lower Rideau Lake a ferry service started operating about 200 years ago, and remained in operation until the construction of the first wooden bridge in the late 1800’s. The current, modern bridge is a well-travelled arterial roadway.
Rideau Ferry still survives as a small but well-loved community of homes, cottages, shops and services. Enjoy your visit!

This design started life as a panoramic photograph taken at the new public docks about a block from Sew Crafty.
I cropped the photo to the proportions needed for the Row-by-Row project, printed it, and enlarged it to the appropriate size. Then the work really started! I eliminated a lot of the detail to make it possible to represent the picture in fabric, hopefully without driving everyone nuts.
Creating the pattern has been quite the challenge. Actually doing the project, however, has been a lot of fun,
and every day we see new, creative additions we can make to further embellish the piece. We’re having so much fun doing that part, we’re continuing on with it. If you’d like to follow these progressions, stay tuned to our
Facebook page or this website for further developments.
